I'm holding a flowering stapeliad, giving visitors an idea what the Titan will smell like when open

Although two people with experience flowering Titan Arum plants have thought the inflorescence would open by this evening or earlier, our vigil continues. A photography student has set up a time lapse camera overhead for an aerial view of opening (thanks Dalton!) and a faculty member has trained a digital video camera on our retiring Titan (thanks Dr. Chris Smith!). Let’s hope this won’t increase inhibitions! The spathe, that will spread out like a big purple skirt when the inflorescence opens, lengthened a bit (as did the stalk) darkened a shade in color and became more leafy at its edge. All promising signs! Personally I give up predicting, although I think opening highly likely before week’s end.

We have initiated a raffle for Titan visitors. For one dollar you can register the day and exact time you think our Titan will be fully open (as recorded on our digital video camera) and if you’re guess is the closest, you will win a chance to choose a free plant from among 5 unusual plants grown in SFSU’s greenhouses. We will continue offering public viewings as staffing allows (we need volunteers to help with Thursday morning 10 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 6 PM. Possibly Friday as well!

Hope to see you at the Titan Vigil,

Martin
